Break Free
Project overview
This project is about stoping all sorts of "isms" in todays society and trying to spread out the movement further than the High Tech High village. We made several different pieces about personal "break free" moments and other peoples views on stereotypes. We've made posters, cards, paintings, and other wonderful pieces throughout the process of this project.
From The BegginingOur teacher introduced this project in a very interesting way. We had four different posters with four different races(white, black, mexican, and asian) we had to write several stereotypes that we have heard or used before in our lives. We then had to work on breaking free from these stereo types. As you can see on the picture above we've recreated the process at our exhibition.

Group VideoTo get our movement viral we made videos on different social experiments. Each group made a video based on a stereotype they truly cared about. My video was on gender bending and how you shouldn't be limited by a label.
Here are the steps we took to make our video

Exhibition
After setting up for Exhibition it was great watching everything come together in the end. All of our efforts for setting up and preparing made our experience way better. All of our friends and family that came had a great time. They were all moved by each and everyone of our pieces. I feel like we also had a great time just watching each other perform in front of everybody. No body did a bad job, Every single person performed their spoken word with perfection. Over all it was the best set up exhibition I've had since freshman year.
Reflection
When my teacher first introduced this topic to us it was rather funny to nearly all of my classmates, even myself, we all started to get into everything my teacher was explaining to us. It was no longer funny to us, it was a rather serous topic and we all realized that it was a big issue. As this project progressed I've realized all the wrongful stereotypes I have been labeled as, even some stereotypes I didn't realize I had labeled others as. I now know to be aware of the things I say because they're more than just words. The problem I had with break free was exposing myself to all of my friends and strangers at my exhibition I've never done any thing like this before but I realized after everyone was sharing out their stories and I noticed that other peoples stories were harsher than mine. It kinda helped me out seeing everyone else coming out of their comfort zone and I came out of mine. I've learned A lot of stuff about the history of the words used for certain stereotypes and why they just don't make any sense. Well break free has given me a better understanding with certain situations. I wish the Break Free movement the best and I hope my teacher continues this project with other kids because it really has changed me.
